Can a Christian Who is Saved and Has the Holy Spirit Still Sin?
By Alex Reznichenko, Lead Pastor of Pillar Church
Introduction
At Pillar Church, our mission is clear: to be a place where real change happens—a community where people can find God, discover their purpose, and impact the world. A key part of that journey is our Life Groups, where we build authentic relationships and grow together as disciples of Jesus.
During one recent Life Group meeting, a thought-provoking question was raised:
“Can a Christian who is saved and has the Holy Spirit still sin?”
It’s a question many of us have wrestled with at some point in our faith journey. The discussion that followed was not just enlightening—it showcased the power of Life Groups to create spaces for transformation.
Understanding Salvation and the Holy Spirit
The question gets to the heart of what it means to follow Jesus. When we are saved, we receive forgiveness for our sins, and the Holy Spirit comes to dwell within us. This is a miraculous, life-changing event that sets us on the path of sanctification—the process of becoming more like Christ.
But even after salvation, we’re not made perfect overnight. As Paul writes in Romans 7:15:
“I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate.”
This struggle is real. Christians can still sin because we live in a fallen world and still contend with our sinful nature. However, salvation and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit empower us to resist sin and choose righteousness.
The Role of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is not only a seal of our salvation but also a guide and helper in our daily lives. Galatians 5:16 reminds us:
“So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.”
When we do sin, the Holy Spirit convicts us—not to condemn us, but to lead us to repentance and restoration. As 1 John 1:9 assures:
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”
This is the beauty of God’s grace. While we may stumble, we are never abandoned.
How Life Groups Build Disciples
The discussion in our Life Group didn’t just answer the question; it provided a safe space for people to share their struggles, find encouragement, and grow in their faith.
One group member shared how they had felt burdened by guilt, believing their failures made them unworthy of God’s love. Another member gently reminded them of the truth in Romans 8:1:
“So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”
This moment was a powerful reminder that Life Groups are where change happens. It’s where we bring our questions, doubts, and fears and leave with clarity, hope, and community.
At Pillar Church, we believe discipleship happens in relationships. Life Groups are the practical outworking of that vision. They are not just Bible studies; they are places where we grow together, hold each other accountable, and remind one another of the gospel’s transforming power.
Moving Forward in Grace
So, can a Christian who is saved and has the Holy Spirit still sin? Yes, but the more important truth is this: We are no longer defined by our sin. Through the Holy Spirit, we have the power to overcome sin, and through God’s grace, we are continually forgiven and restored.
If you’re not part of a Life Group yet, we invite you to join one. Life Groups are where we walk this journey together—where we don’t have to carry our burdens alone and where we are reminded that change is possible through Jesus.
